Preparing For Your First BabyOnce the 20 week scan has passed then the whole "having a baby experience" starts to intensify. You may, if you chose to, be pretty sure of the new arrivals sex. It's never 100% guaranteed so you still need to wary about going and splashing the cash on pink pushchairs and clothes. Remember you may well be planning on having more children and your first born's little brother might not look quite so dashing in a pink pushchair! Soon the midwife appointments will come at more regular intervals, names will be deeply thought about, final plans will be made for any changes to your home, which room will be the Nursery, how will you decorate it, how long will it take to get the hospital, what is your birthing plan going to be, are you still eating the right foods in the right amount, not to mention what products do you need to buy for the baby and when. It's a veritable banquet of decisions added to what is probably a very busy life already. If you already have family members who have kids then you may well have some of the essentials in your home, namely a Baby high chair, a few baby cups, eating utensils and a stair gate. However you are not going to need these for a while yet, at least 6 months or so. The great thing and the thing to remember (as well as to breathe) is that you have longer than you think to get a lot of the things on your ultimate Baby product shopping list. What you need to have done before the baby is brought home from Hospital Make the finishing touches to your nest. If you have any DIY or Home Improvement tasks that have been waiting then this is the time to do them so you can create a nice, comfortable home for your new family. Remember that things will be very different when the baby comes, it will need a constant temperature so make sure that boiler is working and if you have cold, wooden or tile floors which are no doubt cool but might be impractical so you may want to consider carpets to provide a warmer, cosier and safer environment. It's also a good idea to get all of your white goods checked and serviced as you are going to become part Chinese laundry in the not too distant future, especially if you are environmentally focused and are considering going eco and using reusable nappies. This might also be a good time to think about changing to more environmentally friendly brands with less harmful chemicals. Choosing how to decorate the baby's room can be a great focus for parents and grandparents, getting the right furniture for this is covered in more detail later in this article but at the very least your baby will need somewhere to sleep and somewhere to put all of those clothes and toys. It's amazing how it can seem pretty quickly that your child has more stuff than you do! Products you Must have in the house by the time your baby comes home There are a number of pre-birth essentials that you need to make sure you have before the baby comes home, some of which would stop you even carrying this simple task, if you don't have them. So perhaps this is as good a place as any to start, you will need a Car Seat (group 0) and probably some kind of pushchair/ travel system as well. You will need somewhere for the baby to sleep such as a Moses Basket, including bedding which should be nice and soft to create a cosy place for your newborn. You need a range of basic clothing, such as sleep suits, romper suits and cardigans and a soft towel (for your babies use only). Your baby will need constant feeding and so you will need Baby bottles and sterilizers if you chose to not breast feed (or can't) and Nipple cream and breast pads if you do. You might also want to invest in a breast pump (and we strongly recommend an electric one). Now this is the time many people dread - the start of the long nappy changing journey! But if you feed them then something is going to come out. You will need a changing matt, Nappy sacks, Cotton wool, a changing bag to keep all this newly important gear and of course a never ending supply of nappies.
